- Attached is CapsControl 1.01, a replacement for CapsKiller. CapsControl is
- a fairly well tested extension that deactivates the PowerBook 'caps lock' key.
- It has been tested on System 7, but should work on System 6 as well. The

- Subject: [*] font-card-11.hqx
-
- FontCard (v1.1) is a HyperCard 2.x stack for to catalog your fonts.
- With it, you create A4-letter-sized forms containing (all) keyboard
- characters of (all) active fonts and get them printed or bitmap images
- of them stacked. There's also a report template for you get a printout
- with only one or a few sample lines of each font (save much paper).
- Some features of FontCard are:
- - the default character sets are editable
- - each font card (character sets) is editable
- - text size may be chosen from 9 to 48 for each card
- - quick text spacing chages
- - mark card, unmark card, invert all marks, unmark all.
- - new cards marked automatically; cards for fonts that are
- not available, unmarked automatically (on startup)
- - print card / marked / all
- - create bitmap "shadow" of card / marked / all
-
- Some of those features help you scan through the fonts you keep
- in suitcases or in only one or two machines on your large network.
- FontCard can't catalog fonts from closed suitcases, though, but you
- can open a bunch of fonts, catalog them, unmark them, close them
- /move to another machine, open another bunch of fonts (partly the
- same than the first one, maybe), catalog (only the marked ones of)
- them, etc.
-
- Version 1.1 works with HC2.1 also (1.0 didn't).
-
- FontCard is mostly FREE; It _may_, though, and if used at work or
- in business, _should_ be paid for. Please give a copy to your friends.

-
- "Good" grammar checker? There is no such beast. However, you could
- check out (sorry!) RightWriter. It has options to check for 3 levels of
- education (general public, high school, and college) and five levels
- of writing type (fiction, business, technical, manual, and proposal).
- These catagories are primarily for different writing styles, and not,
- one would hope, for the rules of grammar ;-)
-
- Grammatical tests are based on 12 set rules. While some can be helpful
- (e.g., noun-verb mismatch), other rules can flag down perfectly correct
- usage which even Fowler would not sneer at. RW also comes loaded with
- style, usage, and punctuation rules. As with the rules of grammar, some
- suggestions for changes are worthwhile; others are not. Mercifully,
- you can disable any rule you find to be idiosyncratic (such as what it
- considers to be "weak wording" or "vague"). I must add that all grammar
- checkers are supposed to suffer from similar problems - I can vouch that
- for GramaticMac I tested on a friend's mac. Of course the following is
- completely subjective, but I prefer RW's interface to GM's. While I
- haven't had the occasion to test whether or not WP files can be checked,
- the documentation for the software claims it can.
-
- BTW, a few (4-5?) months ago, one of the Macazines reviewed this class
- of software. Since I don't have the back issues handy, perhaps someone
- else on the net can direct you to the relevant source.

- >to buy an IBM compatible computer--but just the computer, no monitor,
- >keyboard, etc--and link it to my Mac so that there would be only one of
- >everything that each has in common?
-
- I am currently using RunPC/Remote. Using a serial cable (comes with
- the software), hookup the serial ports of your Mac and PeeCee. When
- RunPC is launched on both machines, the Mac monitor and keyboard double
- up as the PeeCee keyboard and monitor. All DOS commands that are typed
- on the Mac Keyboard are relayed to the PeeCee, executed on the PeeCee,
- and the results relayed back and displayed on the Mac monitor. Thus, a
- dedicated PC keyboard+monitor become redundant.
-
- While the system works as advertised, there is every indication that the
- product must have been designed by a bunch of Messy DOS hackers. Things
- you would take for granted in Mac applications (i.e., cmd Q to Quit,
- to list just one teeny-tiny item from my fairly long list of peeves)
- are missing. The dialog boxes and menus are even more byzantine and
- confusing than some prior versions of Ms Word that I used to work with
- (and that is no small feat- I mean both, being more confusing than Word,
- & working with Word ;-). From my point of view, all I am thankful about
- is that my mac has a pseudo-bridge to a tokenringed-IBMed campus.
- Oh yes, it does translate/transfer files to and from either platform.
-
- The product is available from the usual mail order suspects (MacZone/
- Warehouse/Connection) for about $140. There is also a network version
- that wont hog up your serial port; it will run happily off of an
- AppleTalk connection. The "slave" PeeCee can be run by any of 10
- "master" Macs on the network. Cost for this version is ~ $280. Since I
- have the single mac version, I am unable to comment on how well the net-
- work version performs. In all likelyhood, the core program is probably
- the same for both versions.
-
- This probably wont work but...it used to be advertised in MuckWorld/User
- but not any more - it was a product called MicroOrange (or something
- like that). Basically, it was a PeeCee clone on a NuBus board. As I
- remember, it was steeply priced ( a 286 equivalent board cost as much as
- some complete 386 clone systems did). I am also not sure whether they
- had a version for the SE/30 PDS. Actually, it wouldn't matter anyway
- since your processor-direct slot already has a video card (or does the
- video card have a pass-thru slot??)
-
- Hope this helps.

-
- Several utiliies can do that, Dan. Two (bunch-typer-10.hqx, file-typer-
- 30.hqx) are in the archives.
-
- However, it is often not necessary to use them to make a System 7 boot
- floppy. Very often all you need to do is change the application's name
- to Finder. Then, when you quit the app, the system invites you to re-
- start. If you also change type/creator to FNDR/MACS, you cannot quit
- without the programmers or power switch. Quitting just brings you back
- to the application. Upon restart, you must hold the mouse button down
- to eject the boot floppy. All told, if you can get away without changing
- type/creator, it is best to do so.
-
- Some applications need a FNDR/MACS Finder (SAM 3.0 Virus Clinic and
- AutoDoubler come to mind) in a blessed System folder. I cannot get
- SAM to activate unless it is a FNDR/MACS Finder in a blessed System
- folder with its subfiles in their proper sub-folders. I cannot get
- AutoDoubler to activate unless it is in the Extensions folder of a
- blessed System folder -- with the application being a FINDR/MACS Finder.
-
- A neat way of getting around all that is available for folk with LaCie's
- SilverLining 5.33 (et seq). It has a baby Finder in its System folder
- that launches a README file that is really an app launcher. Copy the disk
- and remove the apps. Then put your own app(s) on the copy. README's
- LAUNCH menu then lists all apps on the disk for you to launch. Quitting
- returns to README, from whose FILE menu you can then shut down or
- restart. No renaming or retyping involved.

- Hi all,
-
- I've noticed the comments that people have had about the DeskWriter
- greyscale Driver (3.1) and the problem of printing white text on a black
- background. I have had NO problems doing this. Maybe the application
- in use is set so that it does an OR on the black and white overlay, not
- an AND operation. I have done this just recently using MacDraw II 1.1 -
- no problem (old but good).
-
- Also, although the readme file that comes on the driver disk says
- that it will not work with Borland bought Ashton-Tate software such as
- FullWrite Professional, I have had no problems. In fact I have a
- FullWrite document that the System 7 Laserwriter driver refuses to print
- (image too complicated or some such error) that the DeskWriter Driver prints
- perfectly fine. The readme in this case should have refered only to the
- color driver which none of the former Ashton-Tate software supports - the
- B & W driver works well and is terrific!
-
- Oh yeah - I'm running a Mac LC, 4 meg 40, System 7.0.1, Tune Up 1.1 and

-
- Ok, here we go again....
-
- What I said was, you cannot run EtherTalk and LocalTalk on one
- Macintosh at the same time. That is 100% true.
-
- However, if you turn that Macintosh into a router by using Liason or
- Apple's Internet router, then it can be done. But then you're not
- running EtherTalk and LocalTalk on a Macintosh. You're running
- EtherTalk and LocalTalk on a Macintosh that is running a router.
-
- That may seem picky. My point was, I didn't want to give users the
- idea that doing both is no problem. Many users don't understand that
- LocalTalk and EtherTalk cannot be active at the same time, so when
- they get their Ethernet card, they're quite surprised when they have
- to disconnect LocalTalk.
-
- For most users, running a router on their machine is not an option.
- It slows down the machine too much and is fairly expensive. Most
- places that add Ethernet do it full scale and either dedicate a Mac
- to routing or purchase a hardware router.
-
- As to how users print, the either buy a hardware router, an
- EtherPrint or similar product, or one of the software routers already
- mentioned.

- My work-around was actually quite simple. I used ResEdit to locate the file
- called "Icon" in the Jasmine drive, made it visible, deleted it. Next, I
- copied the file "Icon" from a folder to the Jasmine. The logic was sound.
- After deleting the 'custom' pasted icon from the Jasmine drive, the original

-
- The more I work with ResEdit, the more false confidence I acquire...

- Still, it is only a PeeCee clone... but you get what you pay for ;-)

- In fact NowMenus (not MagicMenus as Murph stated) and SuperBoomerang

- Mount a Prodos format CD-ROM disk on a Mac?
-
- I have an Appletalk network that includes an SE/30 (7.01 tuned 1.1.1, file
- sharing enabled) with an Apple CDSC+. On this net is an Apple IIGS running
- the new IIGS System 6.0 (very hot software).
-
- Most CD-ROM disks are Macintosh, or HFS partitions with Prodos files, e.g.,
- the Apple II System 6.0 CD-ROM just released by APDA.
-
- The quandry. I have the GEM II CD-ROM in Prodos format released in 1990. It
- has seven 32 meg partitions. This disk mounts when the CD-ROM drive is
- attached to Apple II via the Apple II High Speed SCSI card. Dave Lyons of
- Apple said in a note to me he thought it would not be possible to SHARE the
- Prodos CD-ROM on the System 7.0 net, but he thought it could be possible to
- MOUNT the Prodos CD-ROM on the Mac.
-
- I installed Mac v.3.2 CD-ROM extensions, foreign file access, ISO 9600 et al,
- and installed the PRODOS file extension from the IIe card software for the
- Mac LC. (Which allows mounting Apple II 3.5 disks on the Mac desktop)
-
- I have no luck in mounting this CD-ROM when hooked to the MAC. Am really only
- trying to avoid moving the CD-ROM player from computer to computer. If I
- could get the disk to mount, I could copy a Prodos partition to my SE/30 hard
- drive and then share that. I cannot afford (nor will buy) dedicated
- Appleshare file server software.
-
- Any ideas or successes to report on mounting a PRODOS format CD-ROM on a Mac?
- Many thanks.

- (4) For those with Voice Navigators, the new ad confuses me. If you have a LC,

- (5) Mass Micro has a hitchiker pocket diskdrive that gets its power from the

- Subject: One line file descriptions for sumex-aim
-
- I have just recently been trying to get some IBM stuff from a simtel-20
- mirror site in Australia. Although the 'complete' directories of simtel-20
- are not as useful as the 'complete' directory on sumex-aim, the indexes of
- each subdirectory are much more useful than the 'abstracts' files on sumex.
-
- On simtel-20, every program/file/picture etc has a one line description
- (actually, 46 descriptive characters, along with the filename of up to 11
- chars, date of 6 chars, length of up to 7 chars and a few spaces).
-
- I fully realize that it is less simple when mac files have more descriptive
- names anyway, and so the names can be up to 30 or so chars.
-
- However, it couldn't be too hard for posters to include a one-line description
- of what they are posting (say an 80 character limit) AS WELL AS the normal
- abstract. Then, at some later date it would be easier to compile a file
- including the filenames, sizes, upload dates, and this description, which
- would then have a maximum of 2 lines per file.
-
- I would estimate that the entire sumex-aim directory, if done this way, would
- be about 200 k in size (up from the present 100 k or so for merely the filenames,
- sizes and upload date).
-
- If people thought that it was a reasonable idea, and that it was worth doing
- it for the archive as it is, then we could probably split up the task of
- describing the various files by subdirectory. Anyone else interested in the
- idea?
-
- Although there is a lot of stuff there, and you personally may not have used or
- downloaded much of it, the abstracts file itself should be able to tell you
- the minimum amount of info necessary. Files for which the abstract is no good
- or non-existent, would have a one-line description of "-" or "not known".

- to recover data from a corrupted excel spreadsheet, try this:
-
- open a new worksheet
- select a range of cells the same size that you want to recover from the
- corrupted sheet (for example A1:Z50)
- enter the following formula (while the range is still selected)
-
- =filename!$A$1:$Z$50 apple-enter
-
- where filename is the name of the file to recover the data from
- $A$1:$Z$50 matches the dimensions of the selected range in the new worksheet
- and identifies the range of cells in the original file to recover from. The
- range need not begin at $A$1
- apple-enter means to hold down the apple key (some call it the command key)
- while typing the enter key
-
- this method very often works, but is limited to recovering the values (not the
- formulas) of the corrupted file. You may have to vary the size of the range in
- order to skip-over the corrupted range of data in the original file.

- I have just received the following from Dave Sauntry (IN%"daves@microsoft.COM")
- - and, sorry, I dont know how to get those funny quote things that everyone
- seems to use:
- Quote begins:
- Actually, you can do exactly what you want in Word 5. You want to:
-
- 1. create the initial reference as you would normally do.
- 2. when you wish to create the second reference to the same footnote, select
- the original footnote character (the 'updented' number), choose
- Copy, place the cursor where you wish the footnote character to
- appear, and choose Paste Special... You will have to paste this
- character as a Picture.
-
- that's it. You have created a linked object (a picture) to the original
- footnote character. Whenever that character is updated, the linked
- picture will also be updated.
- End of Quote.

-
- Keith Gatling (InfoMac V10, Issue 135) makes a good point - when faced with an
- irritating problem it is easy to fall into the trap of thinking that it *must*
- be everyone else's problem as well. So, how serious is it?
- OK - I don't actually KNOW what percentage of the users of MSW share my
- problem
- with the automatic reference/footnote facility. What I *DO* know is that
- virtually all chemistry journals that I read (a large sample) require the
- reference format that I describe - and so do those chemical engineering,
- physics, biochemistry, pharmacology and medical chemistry journals with which I
- am familiar (a smaller but not negligible sample). It is also pretty standard
- format for theses in these subjects. I suspect (but cannot prove) that the same
- is true of a goodly number of other scientific journals as well. The number of
- people writing scientific papers on MSW world-wide must surely be as large as,
- say, those requiring to type complex mathematical relationships - an activity
- well provided-for for in Word. In other words I think that there is at least a
- reasonable case for assuming that *my* problem is not an insignificant
- peripheral minority problem.
- Incidentally, contrary to what a number of people seem to have assumed,
- I am
- absolutely *not* making the case that Word should include the elements of a
- sophisticated bibliographic database. All I need is that the same reference can
- be cited more than once within the framework of the automatic footnote/reference
- updating routine. (On the other hand I must acknowledge that some of the people
- who responded to my original posting do want much more than this minimum).
- My thinking has been stimulated by this correspondence to the extent tha
- t I
- have come up with a work-around for Word 4/5 which - though not elegant - should
- at least be *almost* confusion proof.
- The first time a particular source is cited, use the automatic footnotin
- g
- routine to insert a reference mark (say superscript 1) and insert the citation
- (say "(1) B. Gates and S. Ollson, J. Entrepreneurial Sci., 10 (2001) 167" ) in
- the footnote window. When this source is cited a second time open the footnote
- window, copy *the entire reference* and paste it into the text at the
- appropriate point - I'll call this a "text reference mark". Bracket this text
- in some distinctive fashion to make it easy to locate with the Find command,
- e.g. <<< (1) B. Gates and S. Ollson, J. Entrepreneurial Sci., 10 (2001) 167 >>>
- and/or change it to bold (or give it a colour) to make it easy to spot visually
- while rapidly scrolling through the manuscript.
- Repeat this operation with each multiple citation. Word will renumber t
- he
- automatic reference marks during subsequent rounds of editing, addition of
- further citations etc. - the "text reference marks" will remain unchanged unless
- you deliberately move them around. When you are *absolutely certain* (and this
- is critical) that the text is in its final form - and hence that the automatic
- reference marks have stabilised to their final values - search or scroll through
- the document to find the "text reference marks". At the first encounter, open
- the footnote window, identify the corresponding true reference mark and use the
- global Find/Change-To routine to replace the "text reference marks" with
- non-automatic but otherwise correct superscripts.
- The only potential pitfall that I see in this is the possibility that a
- major
- change-around in the text could result in a "text reference mark" being placed
- earlier in the text than the corresponding automatic reference mark. It would
- be necessary to watch out for this and make appropriate adjustments before the
- final global replacement. If someone comes up with a simpler confusion-proof
- answer please let me know.
- I hope that sympathetic non-scientists out there can now see why some of
- us
- wish that those friendly folk at Microsoft Corp. would take this one on board?
- Appropos of which - can anyone tell me if *they* can be contact ed by E-mail?

- Help - I got a weird icon on start-up after my system crashed.
-
- End of last week, my Mac wouldn't boot, just giving me the enquiring floppy
- disk/question mark icon. On booting from a IIsi minimal system disk, the HD
- wasn't shown on the desktop. Norton utilities DiskDoctor found various things
- to fix, and a few it couldn't. However, it fixed enough sufficiently to
- successfully reboot and I had no more time to delve deeper.
-
- However, this morning, my Mac didn't display the Finder menus, and on clicking
- where they should have been, gave me:
- system error (Finder), bad F-line instruction
-
- On rebooting, along with the usual startup icons, I then got this new icon,
- which I've encountered once before (when Other Bad Things happened).
-
- White square, with three horizontal bars along the top. three ???'s underneath,
- and what looks like a matchstick (representing a disk head?) hanging diagonally
- down from the right side, something like:
-
- __________
- __________
- ==========
- ??? /
- /
- /
- OO
-
- Then got the same Finder menus problem and error.
-
- DiskDoctor again found various things to fix which I recognised from the last
- time, but are well beyond my understanding (e.g. non-zero fLink on last leaf
- node; volume information block damaged, duplicate down link), but couldn't find
- a missing thread for a folder, and when Checking Allocation, couldn't fix an
- incorrect parent ID, and found a couple of damaged files which I've since
- trashed.
-
- Have successfully rebooted, everything 'seems' normal, though Disk First Aid
- still tells me the disk is damaged and can't be repaired.
-
- Sorry about the exhaustive detail - I don't what's important to know.

- (I was about to install Tune-Up 1.1.1 on a Tuned-Up (1.0) IIsi 5/80).

- Subject: System 7 icons
-
- As Robert Hess mentioned, custom icons are stored in invisible files named
- "Icon\13". Unfortunately someone in Apple Spain goofed and in the localization
- process decided to translate the invisible icon filename to "Icono\13" (the
- Spanish equivalent).
-
- So how does this cause problems? Well, in our office we have users that have
- the US version of System 7 installed and others that have the Spanish version.
- If we interchange floppies, removables or hard disks between a US and Spanish
- Mac, we "lose" custom icons. Even worse is that the fancy custom icon I put
- on my shared folder doesn't show up when users of the other system mount my
- folder :( All they see is the plain document icon.
-
- Apple Latin America came out with a temporary fix that lets you translate all
- "Icon\13" files on a disk to "Icono\13", but of course this doesn't help with
- File Sharing (uhh, that's "Compartir Archivos" :) The best thing is to wait
- (and hope) for a correctly localized System 7.1. This is clearly a problem
- with the Spanish system, because the Dutch version works fine (no "Ikoon\13"
- file, thank you!).
-
- Finally, my workaround has been to maintain the custom icon file in both
- languages for those cases where it matters. Works fine!
